Welcome !

Early Childhood Center-School Year 2016-2017

"Play is the highest expression of human development."
Welcome to The One School At Temple Beth Am, Celebrating the Whole Child. We understand and respect that every child is essentially, ‘the one.’ Every child is unique. The specifics of how we nurture and grow each child are dependent entirely upon the needs of the child. This is how we celebrate each child - by engaging him or her at his or her point of need. The One School partners with every parent to ensure every child is championed and educated as an individual.

The One School is a NAEYC Accredited, Reggio Emilia Nature-inspired school, serving ages 18 months to five years. The One School offers certified teachers, a low student/teacher ratio, an emergent creative curriculum and specialty areas of study including science, art, music, foreign language and nature study. The One School’s curricula are supplemented by young family programs and parenting workshops, an infant and toddler program, Family Center, Summer Camp, after school enrichment classes and an active and instrumental Parent Teacher Organization. A commitment to contribute to the community and the world at large is also a part of the school’s social justice philosophy.

This week we learned about the sense of touch.  We painted with shaving cream, made a texture box, explored with different mixers. While discovering our sense of touch we also used other skills: color recognition, fine motors, eye and hand coordination. The Duckling really enjoyed the sense of touch! Cant wait to learn about our next sense!

My Gym Adventures

In my Gym this week the Ducklings went on several adventures! The children were able to pretend to go down a giant snow hill on a sled! Also, a few of our Ducklings were able to go on a horse ride. All of our friends went under a huge parachute to explore all different colors! While the ducklings engage in these activities they demonstrated; balance, color recognition, following directions, gross and fine motor skills, hand and eye coordination, and sharing with friends.

My Gym Fun!

This week in my gym the children practiced many gross motor skills! Some gross motor skills used were forward rolls, crawling through tunnels, stacking rings, and throwing small sensory balls. As the Ducklings engaged in these activities they demonstrated: trusting adult supervision, hand and eye coordination, color recognition, following directions, and sharing with friends!

"To The Sukkah We Will Go..."

The Ducklings enjoyed connecting with nature and taking a special field trip to visit the
sukkah, a temporary hut-like dwelling traditionally decorated with natural materials and
autumn harvest fruits and vegetables.  They enjoyed running inside on the grass
and looking at the colorful decorations.

My Gym Fun

The Ducklings enjoyed another session of My Gym.  They worked on their fine motor
skills as they stacked turtle shells, practiced their gripping skills as they held onto hula hoops,
and used their imaginations as they drove vehicles on a "Road Carpet."  The children also
used their senses as they played with Koosh Balls.  The fuzzy, rubbery texture of the balls
along with their bright colors attracted their attention.  Other skills the Ducklings worked
on included:  spatial awareness as they crawled through tunnels, gross motor as they jumped
over hurdles, balance as they went on horsey rides around the Social Hall, and hand-eye
coordination as they chased and popped bubbles.

Animals in Action!

The Ducklings enjoyed a session of Creative Movement with Ms. Yael.  As she read
the book "From Head to Toe" by Eric Carle the children imitated the sounds and
movements of a variety of animals.  They also had the opportunity to exercise their large
muscles as they used scarves as wings and danced, flew, jumped, and spun around like
birds.  Some of the birds even hid under their scarves!

Rosh Hashanah Fun

The Ducklings had a chance to make their own round challahs for Rosh Hashanah.  They
used their sense of touch as they felt the sticky, squishy texture of dough as they rolled it
out, stretched it, and coiled it to make it into a circular shape.  Nothing beats the smell
of fresh baked challah!  We then had fun clapping our hands and stomping our feet as
we sang a Rosh Hashanah version of "Challah in the Oven."
Round challah in the oven gonna watch it rise (3x's)
                                                   Right before my very eyes
Gonna clap my hands, gonna stomp my feet (3x's)

My Gym Fun

The Ducklings had their first session of My Gym.  They had a chance to work on
balance and core body strength as they walked across a wiggly bridge and went
on snow dish rides around the Social Hall.  The children also practiced forward
rolls, worked on their spatial awareness skills as they crawled through tunnels, and
had the opportunity to feel the soft, squishy texture of "O Balls."  We ended our
session with some "Parachute Fun."  Parachute play promotes social interaction and
cooperation, requires children to follow directions, and helps them develop a sense
of rhythm.

A Moving Rosh Hashanah

On Monday the Ducklings enjoyed their first session of Creative Movement with
Ms. Yael.  They began by warming up their hands and feet as they sang the "Movement
Song."  They then learned Rosh Hashanah songs and used their imaginations as they
pretended to reach up high and shake apples down from a tree as they sang "Three
Juicy Apples."  They also pretended to dip their apples into honey as they made a
"blessing loud and clear for a Sweet New Year."  The Ducklings especially enjoyed
dancing with colorful ribbons.  They dipped their apple ribbons into honey and
jumped, shook, and spun their apples all around.

Make New Friends

Friendships are important in order to help children grow emotionally and socially.
This week our focus was on having the children get acquainted with one another.  The
Ducklings are learning their friends' names as they sing the "Name Game" song.  They
are smiling at each other, giving high-fives and handshakes to one another as they sing
the "Welcome Song," and playing near each other, but independently.  Some of the
children are even learning to share their toys and take turns with their friends.

Ducklings First Shabbat

The Ducklings had a wonderful first week of school.  Most of the children were with us
for summer camp and already are used to the routine.  They are so well-adjusted that we
decided to take a field trip to the sanctuary to celebrate our first Shabbat of the school
year.  All the children held the rope!  Ms. Paula and Mr. Brett led us in the blessings
over the candles, wine, and challah.  Some of the Ducklings even danced their
challah on their head (rosh), af (nose), beten (stomach), and lev (heart).  Yes, the
children are learning Hebrew words for some of their body parts!

Ducklings Grow a Garden

The Ducklings enjoyed their last session of Creative Movement with Ms. Yael.
They had a chance to use their imaginations as they utilized their bodies to plant a
garden.  They used their hands to dig the dirt, plant the seeds, and pat the soil; their
feet to stomp the soil; their fingers to make the rain fall; and they even spread
their arms above their heads for the shining sun.  The children jumped and marched
their gardens and spun them around in a circle.  They added colors to their garden
using rainbow colored ribbon.  They shook their ribbons and danced with them.  They
ended their session by resting their garden bodies on the floor.

Happy Birthday Israel

In celebration of Yom Ha'atzma'ut, Israeli Independence Day, we focused on teaching the
Ducklings the colors blue and white, the colors of the Israeli flag.  They felt the pliable
texture of play-dough and the cool, smooth feel of paint on their hands as they finger-painted
using blue and white.  They also exercised their large muscles as they danced with blue
streamers to Israeli music.

Farm Animal Movement

The Ducklings, under the direction of Ms. Yael, moved like a variety of farm animals
as we read "Farm Alarm."  They wiggled like a pig, put their hands up in the air as they
shouted "Cock-a-doodle-doo," hugged their bodies like cuddly sheep, jumped like a horse,
and flew around the room like chickens. They even shook their shakers as they listened to
"I Know a Chicken."

"Artsy Thursday"

The Ducklings had a chance to make their own collages.  We placed a variety of collage
materials on the table and encouraged the children to use their imaginations to create.
Open-ended art fosters creativity, communication skills, social skills, and helps toddlers
develop their fine motor muscles.

Work Together Wednesday

The Ducklings had a chance to work together building a barn, a sandcastle, and a "mountain"
of leaves.  Building together helps toddlers increase their language skills, promotes creativity,
gives them an opportunity to practice their fine motor skills, and allows them to develop their
social skills.  They are learning to cooperate, share, and take turns.  In addition, as they observe
their friends working they become curious and want to join in, thus building upon their interests.

Taco Tuesday

The Ducklings took a trip to our preschool garden to see the herbs, lettuce, and tomatoes
that are growing.  We then provided each child with a Taco shell and a plate of cheese,
lettuce from the garden, and tomatoes from the garden and encouraged them to create their
own Tacos.  We then discussed the importance of eating healthy foods.  Cooking with toddlers
builds their confidence and creativity, enhances their communication skills, deepens connections,
provides them with sensory experiences, and gives them an opportunity to practice following
directions.

Music Monday

Each year the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)
celebrates young children by sponsoring the "Week of the Young Child."  It is a time
to focus attention on the needs of young children and their families and to thank you for
entrusting us with the care of your children and for choosing "The One School."  Today we celebrated with "Music Monday."  The Ducklings formed a band as we played "Old MacDonald
Had a Band."  The children learned about rhythm as they played instruments, worked on their
social skills as they took turns playing different instruments and joined in a group, and practiced
their gross motor skills as they marched around the room.

Mighty Ducklings My Gym

The Ducklings enjoyed a session of My Gym.  They worked on spatial awareness
as they crawled and walked through a variety of tunnels, learned about rhythm as
they played musical instruments, learned about cause and effect as they played with
a spinning toy, practiced their hand-eye coordination as they stacked rings onto
cones, and used their imaginations as they drove cars onto a road carpet.  They also
worked on hand-eye coordination as they practiced keeping their vehicles on the
road.  The children even practiced their climbing skills on a "Nester" and ended
their session with fun rides around the Social Hall on a rocking horse.

A Moving Passover

The Ducklings had their special Passover Program with Ms. Yael.  They learned the story
through music and movement.  They know that Pharaoh was a mean king and made the
Jewish people work hard.  The Ducklings pretended to dig their shovels deep and bang
their hammers low as they sang "The Building Song."  When Moses asked Pharaoh to
"Let My People Go" he said, "No, No, No!"  God was angry with Pharaoh and sent Duckling
frogs to jump everywhere as a punishment.  Pharaoh decided to free the Jewish people so
they left in a hurry.  The Red Sea parted and the Jewish people were free!  The Ducklings
celebrated their freedom by dancing with scarves to "Dayenu."  The children were tired from
working hard so they ended by taking a rest.
Thank you Ms. Yael for all of your hard work and dedication!!

Springing into Passover

The Ducklings practiced for their upcoming Passover Celebration with Ms. Yael.  They
learned that Pharaoh was mean and made the Jewish people work hard.  They gave their
hammers a heavy blow and dug their shovels deep as they sang "The Building Song."  They
now know that Moses asked Pharaoh to "Let My People Go" but he said, "No, No, No!"
Pharaoh was punished as the Ducklings began to jump like frogs everywhere.  The children
ran out of Egypt and were so happy to be free that they began dancing.

Bake Me a Hamantaschen

On Tuesday the Ducklings used their senses as they made hamantaschen,
jelly-filled triangular shaped cookies that remind us of Haman's hat.  The children
had a chance to choose their filling and chocolate chips seemed to be the favorite!
"Pat-a-cake, pat a cake, baker's man,

A Visit From The Dentist

Dr. Goldvasser visited "The One School" to talk with the children about Dental Health.
He brought his friend "Diggity Dog" to help demonstrate the proper way to care for
teeth.  The children learned the importance of brushing in the morning and at night,
of flossing to help clean between the teeth, and of eating healthy foods to help protect
and keep the teeth strong.  They also learned the proper brushing technique:
"up, down, and all around," and some of them even had a chance to practice on "Diggity
Dog."

Busch Wildlife Visit

Today Ms. Kim from Busch Wildlife came to visit "The One School" with a program
about Native Florida Animals.  The Ducklings had the opportunity to see and touch
Pierce, the alligator, Helmet, the box turtle, and Clyde, the skunk.  The children learned
that the alligator's stripes serve as camouflage and they have bumpy skin; not all turtles
swim; and that skunks spray to protect themselves and stomp their feet when they get
angry.  They also had a chance to see a snake and Pablo, the screech owl.  They now
know that Pablo hunts at night and is 30 years old-slightly younger than Ms. Laurie!

Mazel Visits the Ducklings

This week the Ducklings had a special visitor, Mazel, The Shabbat Puppy, part of the
Traveling Curriculum Project provided by the Friedman Commission for Jewish
Education (CJE).  The Ducklings pet Mazel and one of the children commented on
how soft he felt.  Several of the children decided that Mazel wanted to listen to a story
so they pretended to read to him.  Mazel joined the Ducklings for snack and two of the
children even shared their food with him!  Mazel also joined the children for center time
and had fun playing fetch and giving "doggy" rides.

Movin' with Ms. Yael

On Monday, the Ducklings enjoyed Creative Movement for the first time this year.
While learning about Tu B'Shevat, the birthday of the trees, the children pretended
to plant seeds in a row, "Inch by Inch."  They also waved their arms in the air like
branches on a tree.  Ms. Yael also had a surprise for the Ducklings.  Since she knew
that they have been studying different modes of transportation she took them on
an adventurous boat ride along with the bears in Trapani's book "Row, Row, Row
Your Boat."  The children held onto a blue stretch band and rowed as they used
their imaginations and  pretended they were on a boat in the water. They also
exercised their large muscles as they jumped, rocked, and shook their boats.

Rolling with Ramps

The Ducklings used a variety of materials to cover ramps and observe how the different
textures impacted the speed of the cars.  As they were experimenting with the cars they
felt the fuzziness of felt; smoothness of fun foam; coarseness of sandpaper; and the
bumpiness of bubble wrap.  We concluded that the cars moved slowest when the ramps
were covered with bubble wrap.

into the "Chicken Coop," learned about rhythm as they played a variety of musical
instruments, practiced their hand-eye coordination as they stacked rings onto cones, worked
on their fine motor skills as they built with cardboard brick blocks, and honed their spatial
awareness skills as they crawled through tunnels.  The children also had the opportunity to

Latkes Galore

Latkes are potato pancakes fried in oil and traditionally eaten by Jewish people on Hanukkah
to remind us of the miracle of the oil lasting for eight days.  The Ducklings especially thought
it was humorous as they watched latkes jump out of a pan as they listened to the rhyme:  "Five
Little Latkes."  The children then had a chance to exercise their small muscles as they washed
potatoes in a bin filled with water.  They felt the roughness and graininess of the skin.  After
washing potatoes the Ducklings used their senses as they tasted crisp, sweet potato latkes
for snack.

Ducklings Plant Corn

Just like the Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn we are busy
teaching the Ducklings how to plant their own corn.  They scooped out soil, placed seeds
in the soil, covered the seeds with more dirt, and then watered them.  We hope
they will have started to sprout when we return from Thanksgiving break.

A Ducklings' Thanksgiving

The Ducklings began their day by making some traditional Cranberry Sauce to share
with their families at their Thanksgiving feasts.  They had the opportunity to use all of
their senses. They especially enjoyed the smell of the cranberries; touching the ice cold,
hard strawberries; and licking the leftovers off of the spoon.  Our families then joined us
as we culminated our Thanksgiving unit with a special celebration with Ms. Yael.  The
children sang and danced to Thanksgiving/Fall songs.  They enjoyed gobbling and wobbling
like turkeys and pretending rainbow colored scarves were leaves as they raked, jumped in,
threw, danced, and rested with them.

We explained to them that some Native Americans used to live in tepee homes and we
pointed out its triangular shape.  The children exercised their gross motor skills as they
crawled in and out of the tepee.  They also worked on their social skills as they shared the
space and sat inside the tent with other Duckling friends.  Some of the children even invited
their plush turkey friends and other stuffed animals to join them inside.  One of the Ducklings
decided to pack a small bag!

and "Mr. Duck."  They took turns gobbling with one hand and quacking with the other
until "Mr. Turkey" and and "Mr. Duck" began to play!  They also gobbled and wobbled
like turkeys.  The children then used their imaginations as they pretended rainbow
colored scarves were leaves as they danced with them, jumped in them, threw them up
in the air, and raked them.  They even worked on strengthening their oral muscles as
they blew on their leaves.  We ended our session by relaxing our muscles and resting
with our leaves.

Ducklings Gym Time Fun

The Ducklings enjoyed a session of "My Gym."  They used their senses as they felt the
silkiness of scarves on their skin; utilized their imaginations as they drove vehicles on a
"Road Carpet" and created a variety of "Mr. Potato Head" faces; worked on balance and
incline and decline as they walked across and up and down a plank; and practiced their
hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills as they chased after, caught, and popped
bubbles.  They ended their session with a fun train ride.

It's O.K. To Get Messy!

On Wednesday we implemented what we learned in the "Art is a Process"
class.  We provided the children with a different type of paper (newspaper) for them to paint
on, encouraged them to get messy, and gave them ample time to explore the paints.  The
Ducklings used their hands and feet to feel the cold, smooth texture of the paint.  Art is all
about the process not the product!

Moving into Fall with Ms. Yael

On Monday the Ducklings enjoyed dancing to a variety of fall songs during their
session of Creative Movement/Music with Ms. Yael.  They used their imaginations
as they waved their arms up high in the air like branches on a tree.  Their orange, red,
yellow, and brown leaves came tumbling down to the ground.  They also pretended
to rake their leaves, jump in them, and throw them up in the air.  They even danced,
shook, and took a rest with their rainbow colored leaves.

Here Comes the Fire Engine

"Wee-ooh, wee-ooh, wee-ooh."  To help celebrate Fire Prevention Month we were visited
by the Palm Beach County Fire Department.  The Ducklings had the opportunity to see a
big, red fire truck and look inside open compartments.  They noticed many hoses.  The
children also saw a firefighter dressed in uniform and some of them even shook his hand!

Ducklings Fall Connection

The Ducklings had the opportunity to connect with nature as they went on a walk around
the playground and collected natural materials.  They practiced their fine motor skills as
they utilized sticks and leaves as paintbrushes and then dipped them into fall colored paint
to make lines and dots onto paper to create "Fall Trees."  The Ducklings adorned their trees
with the leaves, sticks, and bark they gathered from outside.

Sukkah Fun

The Ducklings enjoyed connecting with nature and taking a special field trip, with Ms.
Christina, to the Sukkah, a temporary hut-like dwelling traditionally decorated with autumn
harvest fruits and vegetables and natural materials.  The children enjoyed running on the
grass inside the Sukkah and exploring the hanging branches.  They had the opportunity
to choose a special spot to hang their fruit necklaces.

Fun with Pumpkins

Pumpkins are a symbol of the bounty of the fall harvest.  We cut open a pumpkin and
encouraged the Ducklings to explore the insides.  Some of the children examined the
seeds while others felt the slimy, gooey, squishy pulp.  We placed some seeds in a
moist paper towel and put them in a Ziploc bag.  We will observe them over time to
see if they sprout.

"A Whole Lot of Shaking to Sukkot"

The Ducklings enjoyed a session of Creative Movement with Ms. Yael.  They began by
warming up their hands and feet as they sang the movement song.  They worked on
following directions, body awareness, and impulse control as they shook "fruit shakers"
 as they sang "Did You Ever Shake a Lulav?"  They shook their shakers and stopped;
jumped them up and down; shook them high and low, fast and slow; and shook them from
side to side.  The children also practiced their gross motor skills as they marched and
tiptoed to the sukkah.  They ended by resting in the sukkah and pretending to look up
at the stars as they sang "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star."

Ducklings Dress Up

Ms. Christina invited the children to explore a variety of dress-up clothes and she even
put on an outfit herself!  Dress-up play teaches children many important skills:  it promotes
the use of imagination, it helps them build social skills as they learn to take turns and share,
it fosters language development, and it assists them in learning about different roles in
the larger community.

Mighty Ducklings Gym

The Ducklings practiced their hand-eye coordination as they stacked rings onto cones.
Other skills they worked on included:  balance as they went on "horsey" rides around
the Social Hall, gross motor skills as they jumped over turtle shells, and spatial
awareness as they crawled through tunnels.  The Ducklings also used their senses as
they played with Koosh balls.  The fuzzy, rubbery texture of the balls along with
their bright colors attracted the children's attention.  The Ducklings even had the chance
to practice upside down motion as they did headstands.  The children ended their
session by listening to the finger-play "Two Little Blackbirds."

Rosh Hashanah Round

The Ducklings had a chance to see two round challahs: one plain and one with raisins. They then made their own "mini challahs." The children used their sense of touch as they felt the sticky, squishy texture of dough as they rolled it out, stretched it, and then coiled it to make it into a circular shape. Nothing beats the smell of fresh baked challah!

A Moving Rosh Hashanah

On Monday the Ducklings enjoyed their first session of Creative Movement with
Ms. Yael.  They began by warming up their hands and feet as they sang the movement
song.  They then learned Rosh Hashanah songs and used their imaginations as they
pretended to reach up high and shake apples down from a tree as they sang "Three
Juicy Apples."  The children also learned opposites as they shook apple shakers
high and low, fast and slow.  The Ducklings even learned about rhythm as they listened
to Ms. Yael blow the shofar and then imitated the sounds as they pretended to also
blow a horn as we sang "Shofar Blast."

Apple Delight

With Rosh Hashanah fast approaching, the Ducklings have been busy exploring apples.
They used their fine motor skills to fill and dump apples into a "dump truck" in the
block area; they created apple collages using apple stamps, apple-shaped sponges, and
pre-cut apples; and they used their senses as we cut open an apple.  They noticed the many
seeds inside and some of the children even tried to say the word "seeds;" they used their
sense of touch as they felt the smooth skin and the wet, firm texture of the inside of the
apple; and they smelled its sweetness.

Look, Seeds!
Mmm, smells sweet!

Sweet as Honey

On Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, it is customary to dip apples into honey for a
"Sweet New Year."  The Ducklings had the opportunity to use their senses as they explored
honey.  They smelled the honey on the plate, dipped their fingers into the honey and felt
its stickiness, and then licked their fingers to taste its sweetness.  Some of the children
chose to dip their fingers in again for seconds.

Ducklings Walk the Line

The Ducklings exercised their large muscles as they practiced walking on the rope.  It is
a safe and easy way to travel from one place to another in the building.  As the children
hold the rope they are working on following directions and learning to share since
it is sometimes necessary for more than one child to hold the same ring.

           Tzedakah

We displayed a special "Duck Bank" that Ms. Paula generously gave to our class. We explained that each Friday, on Shabbat, that we will put money in the bank and that it will be used to buy food for people in need. The children practiced their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills as they put coins into the slot. They even used their senses of hearing as they listened to the clinking of the coins as we shook the bank.

Little Helpers

Some of the Ducklings were watching us as we used towels to dry off the wet playground. We handed the children rags and they began to model our actions and wipe down the wet toys. "Much of the learning that occurs during development is acquired through observation and imitation."

Ducklings Learn About Red

This week the children had the opportunity to explore a variety of "red" objects.  They
used their sense of touch as they felt the fuzziness of felt, the squishiness of a sponge,
the bumpiness of a sensory ball, and the softness of feathers and pom-poms as they
played at the sensory and created a "Sticky Collage."  They also tasted the sweetness of
"red" fruits:  raspberries and strawberries.  Some children found the "red" ice cream in
the dramatic play area and the "red" mail in the mailbox.  The Ducklings even found
"red" toys to play with on the playground:  balls, cars, and drums.

                Duckling's Make New Friends 2014

This week we encouraged the children to get acquainted with their Duckling classmates.
Toddlers learn best by watching each other, working in small groups and through parallel play,
in which they play near each other but independently. We are reinforcing the use of sharing

Make Way for Ducklings 2014

The Ducklings had a great first week of school.  They are learning classroom routines and
rules, exploring the centers, and having fun on the playground.  We are working on social
skills:  "safe and sharing" hands, following directions, and sitting at the table for mealtimes.
We are also focusing on their self-help skills, especially hand washing and having the children
throw out their own garbage after eating.  On Friday we ended our busy week with a Shabbat
Celebration in the classroom.  Check out the attached Smilebox slideshow to see all the
fun experiences we enjoyed.

Ducklings Grow a Garden

The Ducklings used their imaginations as they used their bodies to grow a garden.  They
used their hands to dig the dirt, plant the seeds, and pat the soil.  They used their feet to
stomp the dirt.  The children even used their fingers to pretend to make the rain fall so
that their garden would grow.  Their flowers grew and danced in the garden.  They even
pretended that caterpillars were crawling in their garden and they rolled into a cocoon
and then turned into butterflies.  The butterflies flew around the room with their rainbow
colored wings.  They flew their wings high and low, fast and slow.

Week of the Young Child

This week we celebrated the "Week of the Young Child," a time to focus attention on the
needs of young children and their families and to thank you for entrusting us with the care of
your children and for choosing "The One School."  We celebrated this special week by promoting
children's early literacy with the reading of books by Margaret Wise Brown.  We read "Big Red
Barn," "A Home for a Bunny," and "Bunny's Noisy Book."  In keeping with our springtime
theme we likened the books to spring on the farm and explained to children how baby animals
are often born in the springtime.  We culminated our reading with the creation of a bulletin
board that is hanging in the classroom.

"Pigs in the Mud"

We mixed cornstarch, water, and brown paint together to create a mud-colored goop.  The
Ducklings had the opportunity to use their sense of touch as they felt the cold, rigid, sliminess
of the concoction as they played with a mother pig and her piglets in the "mud."  As the
children patted or squeezed the goop with their hands it hardened, and as they opened their
hands to let it ooze it dripped through their fingers like a liquid.

A Ducklings Passover Celebration

The children had their special Passover program with Ms. Yael.  They learned the story
through music and movement.  They know that Pharaoh was a mean king and made the
Jewish people (Ducklings) work hard.  They pretended to dig their shovels deep and bang
their hammers low as they sang the "Building Song."  When Moses asked Pharaoh to
"Let My People Go!" he said, "No, No, No!"  God was angry and sent frogs to punish
him.  Pharaoh decided to free the Jewish people so they left in a hurry.  The Red Sea parted
and the Jewish people (Ducklings) were free!  They celebrated their freedom by dancing
with scarves to "Dayenu."  The children were tired from working hard so they ended their
program by taking a rest.
Thank you Ms. Yael for all of your hard work!!!

Springing into Passover

The Ducklings had a practice session for their Passover program with Ms. Yael.  They
worked hard, like Pharaoh's Jewish slaves, and "dug their shovels deep and gave their
hammers a heavy blow."  The children know that when Moses asked Pharaoh to "Let
My People Go!" he said, "No, no, no!"  Pharaoh was punished and frogs began to jump
everywhere.  Pharaoh decided to let the Jewish people go free so they left and crossed the
Red Sea in a hurry.  They were so happy that they began to sing and dance.  The Jewish
people were so tired when they were finally freed so they rested.

On Wednesday the Ducklings had their Purim Celebration in the chapel with Ms. Yael.
They pretended to pat, roll, and fold dough to make corners three as they sang "Bake Me
a Hamantaschen."  They also used their imaginations as they put special three-cornered hats
on their heads as they sang "My Hat it has Three Corners."  The children also had fun tumbling
all around like the "Jesters of Queen Esther."  They especially enjoyed shaking their Pasta Box
graggers high and low, fast and slow as they sang "Chag Purim."  They exercised their large
muscles as they danced, jumped up and down, marched, and twirled around with their
graggers.  The Ducklings returned to the classroom and everyone had a chance to taste
hamantaschen.  They were yummy!  The Ducklings even made their own special triangular

Ducklings Outdoor Fun

The Ducklings used their senses while on the playground.  Aidan picked up a leaf and as he felt
it he said it was crunchy.  The teacher asked Emma to find something crunchy so she picked up
a stick and as she broke it apart she put it up to her ear to listen to its crunching sound.  Jane
found a stick and when she touched it she said it was hard.  Natalia and Wells each found a
piece of bark.  Natalia said hers felt smooth while Wells said his was rough.  Ms. Laurie
encouraged the Ducklings to dig in the soil.  Some of the children felt the grittiness of the dirt
and the bumpiness of the chips.  One of the Ducklings even tasted a bit of the dirt!

Little Gardeners

Ms. Laurie brought in two sweet-smelling herb plants, a mint and a Cinnamon Basil.  We
gave them to Ms. Rachel and Ms. Raleigh's class to plant in the "Preschool Garden."  The
Ducklings took a trip to the garden to assist in the planting of these herbs.  They felt the
crumbliness of the soil on their hands and they dug holes in the dirt with shovels.  We will
check back to see how they grow!

Busch Wildlife Visit

The Ducklings had the opportunity to see and touch a variety of animals from Busch Wildlife
Sanctuary.  Ms. Kelly introduced them to "August," the opossum and "Slowpoke" a Box
Turtle.  They learned that "Slowpoke" is a land turtle and is unable to swim in the water.  The
children also met "Sherbert," a Red Rat Snake.  When Sophie approached it and realized it
was a snake she yelled, "Ahhh" and stepped back.  Ms. Laurie didn't get close enough to
scream!  They also met a baby alligator named "Buttercup."  They felt the soft, bumpiness of
its skin.

Ducklings Tu B'Shevat Movement

Tu B'Shevat marks the beginning of the "new year" of the trees.  It will be celebrated
on Thursday, January 16th.  In honor of this special holiday Ms. Yael came into the
Duckling classroom for a session of Creative Movement.  As the children listened to
the "Planting Song" they stood up and used their bodies as tree trunks and swayed
their arms back and forth like branches on a tree.  They also danced with rainbow
colored ribbons and pretended they were leaves on a tree as they shook them from
side-to side, up and down, and all around.

Ducklings Care for "Brownie"

The children used their imaginations as they took "Brownie" to a veterinarian clinic, set up at
the table, to check his injured paw.  They took his temperature, listened to his heartbeat,
took his blood pressure, applied a bandage to his foot, and even gave him a shot of medicine.
This type of pretend play teaches children empathy and real life skills.  Some of the Ducklings
even returned to re-check "Brownie" later in the day.

Dancing Ducklings

The Ducklings had an animal themed session of Creative Movement/Music with Ms. Yael.
They had the opportunity to quack like a duck and perform hand motions as if they were
walking "over the hills and far away" as they listened to Raffi's "Five Little Ducks."  The
children also used egg shakers and other musical instruments as they danced to "I Know a
Chicken."  They had a chance to follow directions, learn opposites, and identify body parts as
Ms. Yael instructed them to shake their instruments up and down, high and low, fast and slow.
She also encouraged them to place their shakers on their various body parts.  The children
even worked on impulse control as they were periodically instructed to stop shaking their
 instruments.

Lots of Latkes

The Ducklings exercised their small muscles as they used a scrub brush to wash potatoes in
a bin filled with water.  They felt the rough, graininess of the skin.  We even cut open a potato
for the children to explore.  They then had the opportunity to taste crispy latkes (potato pancakes)
a Hanukkah treat!

A Special Shabbat Visitor

On Friday "Mazel, the Shabbat the Puppy" visited the children at Shabbat.  He is part of the
CJE's traveling curriculum, an interactive kit that brings to life a character(s) from the
Friedman Commission for Jewish Education's P.J. Library.  Mazel watched as we recited the
blessings and he even helped Ms. Paula sing the blessing over the wine.  The Ducklings will
have a chance to spend a morning with Mazel in mid December.

A Ducklings First Thanksgiving

The Ducklings have been learning about Thanksgiving.  They now know that the Native
Americans and Pilgrims became friends, the Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how
to plant food, and they shared a big feast to celebrate their friendship.  The children
used their imaginations as they pretended to have a Thanksgiving dinner at the table.
They even shucked the corn for their feast. Some of the children invited their friends to
join in the celebration.  Emma invited her "new baby Lyla," some children brought their
Native American friends, and others placed plump turkeys on the table.

Ducklings in the Spotlight

On Wednesday and Thursday the Ducklings enjoyed another session of "My Gym."  They
worked on their spatial awareness skills as they crawled through tunnels, worked on improving
their hand-eye coordination as they stacked hula hoops onto cones and played with balls,
worked on upside down motion as they did headstands, and practiced their balancing skills as
they rocked on an "alligator rocker."  They even had a chance to build core body strength as
they took "Superman" rides.  The Ducklings also felt the softness and squishiness of Koosh balls
and the silkiness of scarves.

Ducklings Thanksgiving Moves

On Monday the Ducklings enjoyed a session of Creative Movement/Music with Ms. Yael.
They put their hands behind their backs as they played the parts of "Mr. Turkey" and "Mr.
Duck."  They took turns gobbling with one hand and quacking with the other until "Mr. Turkey"
and "Mr. Duck"  began to play!  The children also gobbled and wobbled like turkeys.  They
even used rainbow colored scarves as leaves and pretended to rake, jump in, throw, dance,
and rest with them.

Ducklings Firefighter Fun

"Wee-ooh, wee-ooh, wee-ooh."  On Monday, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Station # 19
pulled up to Temple Beth Am and the Ducklings were watching from the playground fence.
The children had a chance to explore the inside of the truck, see the flashing lights, and hear the
siren.  We couldn't believe that just as the fire truck was about to pull away the fire alarm went
off and we had to evacuate the building.  What a coincidence!

Sprouting Pumpkin Seeds

On Monday we were excited to see that some of our Pumpkin seeds began to sprout.  We
called the children over and encouraged them to take a look.  Some of the Ducklings were
curious and wanted to touch the green shoots.  We invited them to plant the seeds in a pot
filled with soil.  With lots of love, water, and sun we will continue to observe the seeds for
continued growth over the coming days and weeks.

Pumpkin Fun

Pumpkins are symbolic of the bounty of the fall harvest.  We cut open the top of one and
encouraged the Ducklings to explore its insides.  Some of the children put their hands inside
and felt the gooey, slimy, squishy pulp.  We placed some of the seeds inside a moist paper
towel and put them in a Ziploc bag.  We will watch them over time to see if they sprout.

Moving into Fall

On Monday the Ducklings moved into "fall" with a session of Creative Movement
with Ms. Yael.  They used their imaginations as they waved their arms up high in
the air like branches on a tree.  Their orange, red, yellow, and brown leaves came
tumbling down to the ground.  They also pretended to rake their leaves.  They
especially enjoyed jumping in a pile of leaves and throwing them high in the air. They
even danced, shook, and took a rest with their rainbow colored leaves.

A Ducklings Special Shabbat

On Friday the Ducklings celebrated Shabbat in the classroom.  The table was set and the
music was playing.  As the children listened to the Shabbat songs they sang along.  As we
said the blessings their candles (fingers) were flickering brightly and their challahs were
dancing to the blessing over the bread.  We then went outside and celebrated Simchat
Torah as the Ducklings marched around waving their home-made flags.

 "Dino-mite Car Wash"

The Ducklings have watched us clean up the playground when it rains.  They decided
to model our actions so they took the rags and began to dry off the toys by themselves.
One of the children said, "It's dry" when she finished wiping down the car.

"A Squirrel's Visit"

During snack time Ms. Christina noticed two squirrels outside our window so she
encouraged the children to come and look.  One of the squirrels was eating a
piece of bread and climbed up to the top of the tree to finish eating.  We decided
to throw some Goldfish crackers outside the door to see if either of the squirrels
would display an interest in eating them.  One of the squirrels took the crackers
between his paw and began eating them.  The children thought this was humorous!

"A Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On"

The Ducklings enjoyed a special Sukkot session of Creative Movement with Ms. Yael.
They shook, spun, and jumped out their sillies.  They then put their hands together and
pretended they were shaking a lulav.  They shook them up, down, and all around.  The
children even pretended they were riding "horsies" into the sukkah.  They marched,
shook, and danced all around with their horses.  They ended by taking a rest in the
 sukkah.

A Ducklings Shabbat

The Ducklings celebrated a special Shabbat in the sanctuary on Friday.  Aside from singing the regular blessings and Shabbat songs they also learned some songs for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, a fall harvest festival.  They sang about building a sukkah, shaking a Lulav, and even about a "Dinosaur Knockin' on the Sukkah Walls..."  Once the children returned to the classroom they were inspired to have their own Shabbat celebration at the table.  Some of the Ducklings  even shook the Lulav all around to show that God was everywhere as they listened to Paul Zim's "The Lulav Shake."

The Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot is a time to connect with nature and celebrate the marvels
of the beauty of the natural world.  We encouraged the Ducklings to collect leaves and twigs
on the playground and to examine tree bark.  The children even saw a squirrel in a tree feasting
on berries.  We even took the Ducklings on a field trip to visit the Sukkah.

"A Ducklings Moving Rosh Hashanah"

On Monday the Ducklings had their first session of Creative Movement with Ms. Yael.  They
celebrated Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur as they sang a variety of apple and shofar songs.
They pretended to reach up high and shake apples down from a tree. They also had a chance
to hear the sounds of the shofar and take turns trying to blow one.  Some of the children used
their imaginations as they put their hands to their mouths and began to make sounds as if they
were blowing the shofar.  The children also danced with rainbow colored scarves to a variety
of holiday music. They hid, jumped, marched, and spun in a circle with their scarves.  They
ended by taking a rest with Ms. Yael.

Duckling Shabbat Fun

The Ducklings celebrated Shabbat in the sanctuary.  They sang "Bim Bam" along with its accompanying hand motions.  They are learning to close their eyes during the blessing over the candles and learning to fold their hands and dance their challah on their various body parts as they sing "Dancing Challah."  They even listened to a puppet show by Ms. Paula and Mr. David about the importance of apologizing when we hurt our friends.  The children were reminded that Yom Kippur, the "Day of Atonement," is a time to say we are sorry to those we hurt.  When we returned to the classroom some of the children tasted Ms. Carol's homemade applesauce.  It sweetened their Shabbat! We then encouraged the Ducklings to use their imaginations and celebrate Shabbat in the dramatic play area.  Ms. Laurie showed the children how to set the table and cook.  This form of modeling teaches the children real life skills.

Ducklings' New Beginnings

The Ducklings are adjusting nicely to school.  They are busy learning the
rules, exploring the centers, and the playground.  They are working on their social
skills as they meet new friends and are learning to play next to one another, share,
and take turns.  They are also learning to participate in group activities as they come
to the carpet for circle time to sing the "Welcome Song" and sit at the table for
snack.  They are even learning self-help skills as they throw away their own
garbage.

This past Monday the Ducklings had their last session of Creative Movement with Ms. Yael.
They listened to the adventures of a bear family's outing on their boat as they encountered
beavers, rough waters, and even a storm in Trapani's book:  "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."
The children then held onto a blue stretch band and used their imaginations as they pretended
they were on a boat in the water.  They exercised their large muscles as they shook, jumped,
marched, rocked, hid, and slept in their boats.

The children enjoyed a special Passover program with Ms. Yael.  They learned the story of
Passover through music and movement.  They now know that Pharaoh made the Jewish people
work hard.  The Ducklings pretended to bang their hammers and dig their shovels as they sang
the "Building Song."  They also learned that Moses asked Pharaoh to, "Let My People Go!"
and he said, "No, No, No" so God punished him with frogs.  The children enjoyed jumping
like frogs on the carpet.  They also had lots of fun running around the room as they pretended
to leave Egypt in a hurry.  To celebrate the freedom of the Jewish people the Ducklings
played tambourines, jumped, marched, and spun around as they sang "Dayenu."  The children
even shook their tambourines high, low, fast, and slow and placed them on their various body
parts.  Once the children were finished singing and dancing they went back to the classroom
to taste special Passover foods.

They also had a chance to learn opposites and directional words as they shook their pasta box
graggers (noisemakers) fast and slow, high and low as they sang "Chag Purim."  They even
reviewed various body parts as they shook their noisemakers on their head, nose, elbows,
and toes.  The Ducklings also had lots of fun exercising their large muscles as they jumped,
marched, and twirled with their graggers. During the Purim Celebration the children even

Beth Am's Preschool this week!  It's Bim and Bom (the sister/brother duo) based on the
the PJ library book, "Bim and Bom, a Shabbat Tale."  Bim and Bom spent the morning with
the Ducklings and had the opportunity to join in circle time and give high-fives and handshakes,
play in the social hall on a rainy day, play in the dramatic play area, listen to a story with Ms.
Sarah, and exercise their large muscles as they did the "Freeze Dance."

 Busch Wildlife Visit

The Ducklings enjoyed a visit from Ms. Cheryl from Busch Wildlife.  The children had a
chance to see and pet a variety of animals native to South Florida.  They were introduced
to "Bernie," the frog; "Helmet," the turtle; "Whisper," the Bird of Prey; "Willie;" the skunk;
and "Sweet Potato," the snake.  The Ducklings were unable to pet "Whisper" since he
bites.  They even learned that he eats bugs, lizards, and other animals.

Ducklings Connect with Nature

The Ducklings are learning about the Jewish holiday of Tu B'Shevat, the "New Year of the Trees."
It is a time to "rejoice in the fruit of the trees and the fruit of the vine."  Tu B'Shevat is a wonderful
time to connect with nature and celebrate the many gifts of the natural world.

Creative Movement with Ms. Yael

On Monday the Ducklings enjoyed their first session of Creative Movement of the
New Year.  They sang songs about the Jewish holiday of "Tu B'Shevat," the "Birthday
of the Trees."  As we sang the songs the children raised their arms high in the air and made
believe they were tall trees.  They also used their imaginations as they pretended that leaves
were falling from their trees.  The Ducklings exercised their large muscles as they danced,
jumped, marched, shook, and walked their trees around the room. They even hid under the
 shade of their trees.

Ms. Jaque's Car

The Ducklings have been learning about different modes of transportation.  As part of our study
we took an exciting field trip to see Ms. Jaque's new car.  We began by showing them the tires.
Some of the children even knew that it was a circle shape.  We then turned on the windshield
wipers and explained that they were used to wipe off water when it rains. The Ducklings
especially enjoyed sitting in the driver's seat and turning the steering wheel and honking the horn.
The loud noise of the horn even startled some of the children!  When we returned to the classroom
we asked the children to tell us about their favorite part of Ms. Jaque's car and these are
some of their responses:
Ruby:  "Ms. Jaque's car, horn."
Cameron:  "Wipers"
Allister:  "I love it.  I like horns, wipers, wheels"
Noah:  "Noah in the car, beepy"
Charlie:  "I like cars!
Stella:  "I drive!"

"Blue Man Group"

The Ducklings had a wonderful sensory experience painting with blue and white.  We placed
a sheet of white paper over the table and poured the paint onto the paper.  The children began
to spread the paint around with their hands, and eventually they realized how much they enjoyed
rubbing it on themselves.

"Ducklings' Hanukkah Celebration"

The Ducklings enjoyed their Hanukkah celebration with Ms. Yael.  They had fun pretending
to be latkes (potato pancakes) "round and brown."  They also had a chance to make dreidels
out of clay as they sang "The Dreidel Song."  They especially enjoyed spinning like a s'vivon
(dreidel) and marching like the Maccabees.

Lots of Latkes

The Ducklings took a trip to the Social Hall where they enjoyed a special Chanukah
treat, latkes made by John Marzina, Ms. Amanda's father.  They had a chance to use their
senses as they smelled and tasted these special potato pancakes.  They even had the opportunity
to feel the texture of the latkes as they picked them up to eat them with their hands.

Moving into Chanukah

The Ducklings enjoyed a session of Creative Movement/Music with Ms. Yael.
They began by wiggling their fingers like candles on a menorah as they sang:  "Oh Hanukkah."
They then had a chance to exercise their large muscles as they danced, jumped, marched,
and spun like dreidels to the songs:  "I Have a Little Dreidel," and "S'vivon, Sov, Sov, Sov."
They also learned how to make circles with their hands while pretending to be latkes
(potato pancakes) as they sang:  "I'm a Little Latke."  They even used their
imaginations as they pretended to eat up their latkes.  Finally, the Ducklings had the opportunity
to march like a Maccabee.

Chanukah Bottle

Chanukah, also know as the "Festival of Lights" is a time for Jewish people to
commemorate the miracle of the oil.  The Ducklings had the opportunity to make
a "Hanukkah Bottle."  We poured some water into a bottle.  The children then
exercised their small muscles and worked on improving their hand-eye coordination
as they poured glitter into the bottle.  They then poured some oil into the bottle, shook
it, and used their observational skills as they watched the oil rise to the top and separate
from the water.

Yoga with Ms. Jaque

The Ducklings have the opportunity to improve their listening skills and their ability to follow
directions as they participate in ongoing Yoga sessions with Ms. Jaque. They are enhancing their
flexibility, strength, and coordination as they perform forward bends, the "butterfly," the
"downward dog," and other moves. Ms. Laurie has even tried these exercises and found
them to be beneficial for the aging back!

        Thankful for Friends

We are always interested to observe how the children interact with one another.  As their
personalities develop we are noticing that they are beginning to move away from parallel play
and starting to interact with one another on the playground in chase games, giving each other
high-fives and handshakes during circle time, and communicating with each other in 2-4 word
sentences.  This Thanksgiving let's give thanks for our new friendships.

Thanksgiving Fun

Upon arrival to the classroom the Ducklings saw a tepee on the carpeting.  We invited them to
explore it and explained to them how some Native Americans made tepees for their homes.  We
also encouraged them to use their problem-solving skills and figure out how to enter it when the
flaps were closed.  Some of the children even recognized that the tepee was a triangular shape.

Strutting our Stuff

The Ducklings enjoyed another session of Creative Movement/Music with Ms. Yael.
They exercised their large muscles as they wobbled, marched, stomped, jumped,
wiggled, twisted, and flew like turkeys around the room.  Ms. Yael even
instructed the children to stop in-between each movement to work on their impulse
control.  The Ducklings also used their imaginations as they pretended to rake, throw,
and jump in a pile of rainbow colored leaves.  They also worked on strengthening their
oral muscles as they blew on their leaves.  We ended our session by relaxing our muscles
and resting with our leaves.

Fall Fun

The Ducklings had the opportunity to connect with nature by creating sustainable art.
Each child was able to choose a leaf from the playground to use as a painbrush and create
a group fall painting with red and yellow paints. We encouraged the children to mix the
paints to create "orange." The Ducklings also exercised their large muscles as they tried to
catch leaves as Ms. Jaque threw them in the air. They especially enjoyed jumping in
a pile of leaves on the playground.

Fire Truck Fun

To help celebrate Fire Prevention Month we were visited by the Jupiter Fire Department.
The Ducklings had the opportunity to see a big, red fire truck.  They even had a chance
to sit in the front seat.  The cab was so high up that the children had to be lifted up into
the truck by a firefighter!  They especially enjoyed seeing the flashing red lights and hearing the loud siren.

Fall Creative Movement

The Ducklings enjoyed dancing to a variety of fall songs during their session of Creative Movement/Music with Ms. Yael. They used their imaginations and pretended they were trees. They swayed their arms in the air like leaves blowing in the wind, dropped their arms to the floor like leaves tumbling down to the ground, pretended to rake their leaves, jumped in them, and even threw them into the air. The Ducklings learned directional words and opposites as they shook their rainbow colored leaves fast, slow, high, and low. Ms. Yael also reinforced body parts as she instructed the children to place the leaves on different parts of their body.

Simchat Torah

The Ducklings were excited to see a very special Jewish book, the Torah.  We even unrolled
a miniature one.  This past Friday during our Shabbat celebration they had a chance to see where
the Torahs are kept and they even watched as the Rabbi and Cantor marched around the sanctuary
holding a Torah.  The Ducklings enjoyed exercising their large muscles as they celebrated the joy
of the Torah while dancing around holding plush Torahs as they listened to the song "Torah, Torah."
The song is upbeat and repetitive making it easy for children to remember.  They also used their
fine motor skills as they glued on Jewish Stars and Torah shapes to create a collage.

     Pumpkin Fun

Pumpkins symbolize the bounty of a fall harvest.  They also offer an abundance of scientific
exploration.  We cut open the top of a pumpkin and the Ducklings had a chance to explore
its insides.  Some of the children even put their hands inside and felt the gooey, slimy, and
squishy pulp.  They were also surprised to see so many seeds.  We wrapped up some of the
seeds inside a moist paper towel and placed them in a Ziploc bag.  We will observe the
seeds over time to see if they sprout and then plant them in our garden.

Connecting with Nature

Sukkot, the Jewish harvest festival, is a time to immerse ourselves in nature.  Some of
the Ducklings went outside on a walk around the playground to collect a variety of
leaves for the class Sukkah, a temporary hut-like dwelling traditionally decorated with
fruits, vegetables, and other items from nature.  The leaves were wet from rainfall so they
were mushy, slimy, and slippery to touch.  The children used their fine motor skills to glue
their collection of leaves onto paper to create a collage to hang in the Sukkah.

The Sounds of the Shofar

The Ducklings were introduced to the shofar, a special horn, traditionally that of a ram,
blown on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.  The children tried to blow a real shofar
but were unable so we invited them to try and blow plastic ones.  Some of the children
were able to make loud noises!  The Ducklings also had a chance to work on their grasp and
fine motor skills as they painted with shofar-shaped sponges.  Some of the children even
marched in a shofar parade to the "Shofar Song."  The rhythmic marching and
instrument playing helps them to improve their coordination and motor skills.

Multicultural Music

The Ducklings had an opportunity to listen to an upbeat Hindi music CD brought in by Anvika's family.  The children took out instruments and began shaking and banging them.  As they played a variety of instruments they discovered the different sounds they made.  They are also developing the feeling of rhythm and learning to establish a beat.  Exposing children to multicultural music expands their horizons and begins the explorations of different cultures.  Thank you Anvika!

Round Challah

The Ducklings made round challah for Rosh Hashanah.  They patted, squeezed, and rolled the dough.  We then coiled it to make them round.  They had a choice to add raisins and chocolate chips.  The children especially enjoyed sitting at the table and eating the left-over chocolate chips!  The Ducklings also made pretend round challahs using paper plates.  They felt the cool, smooth, wet paint on their hands as they spread it around on their plates.  They then exercised their small muscles as they ripped black and purple tissue paper to represent the raisins in their challah.  We also enjoyed a picnic snack of round challah on the playground.

Apple Delight

The Ducklings have been learning all about apples and honey for Rosh Hashanah.  The teacher
suggested that we cut open an apple to see what was inside.  The children were fascinated to see
seeds.  Once the apple was cut open we encouraged them to examine it and to touch the seeds.
We planted some of the seeds in our outside garden.  The children dug a hole, planted the seeds,
and watered them.  We will observe the seeds over time to see if they grow.

 Creative Movement/Music

The Ducklings enjoyed their first session of Creative Movement/Music with Ms. Yael.  They began
by following instructions on how to warm up their hands and feet as they sang the "Movement
Song."  During the song they were instructed to periodically "stop" which helps them to develop
impulse control. The Ducklings danced to apple and honey songs for Rosh Hashanah. They used
their imaginations and pretended to shake apples down from a tree. They especially enjoyed
dancing with rainbow colored ribbons. They had a chance to exercise their large muscles as they
jumped and marched with their ribbons.

                                          Shabbat

Today the Ducklings took a field trip to the sanctuary to celebrate Shabbat.  All the children held the rope!
Cantor Tanya and Ms. Paula led us in the blessings over the candles, wine, and challah.  Ms. Paula even sang "Dip Your Apple into Honey" as she pretended to pour honey onto an apple she was holding.  Some of the children were even able to identify the apple.  It is customary to eat apples dipped in honey for a "Sweet New Year," on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Apple Delight

The Ducklings have been learning about the color "red" and apples for Rosh Hashanah.  They had a chance to use their senses as they looked at, smelled, tasted, and even touched home-made applesauce brought in by Stella's mother, Ms. Rachel.  Some of the children looked at the brownish-yellow color of the applesauce and pushed their cups away while others smelled the contents of what was in their cups and decided not to have any.  Most of the children ate the applesauce and quickly learned that it tasted sweet.  Some of the children smacked their lips at each bite.  As they were eating many of the children spilled some of the applesauce and discovered that it felt wet and sticky on their hands.  The Ducklings also had the opportunity to listen to the sounds of crunching as they ate "Crispy Apple Chips" brought in by Charlie's mother, Ms. Dawn.  Thank you Ms. Rachel and Ms. Dawn!

The Ducklings enjoyed their first session of "My Gym." They worked on color identification and hand-eye coordination as they placed colored rings onto cones and practiced throwing and catching balls. They also had a chance to hone their spatial awareness and problem-solving skills as they crawled through tunnels and walked through a maze. They even practiced tumbling and had an opportunity to work on balance and core body strengthening as they took sled rides.

Scarf Dancing

The Ducklings' stimulated their visual sense as they danced with bright red scarves to Laura Freeman's song "Red."  They learned directional words and opposites as they followed one-step directions and shook their scarves high and low, fast and slow.  Their sense of touch was also aroused by the feel of the silky material on their skin.  They even learned about "object permanence" as some of the children began to hide under their scarves and play peek-a-boo with the teacher and each other.

Duckling Playmates

The children enjoyed sensory experiences as they played at the sandbox with their friends during
outside playground time.  They felt the grittiness of the sand as they dug their hands into it.  They
also enjoyed the cold, wet, smooth feel of paint as they painted at the easel with a friend.  Many of the children dipped their fingers, along with their brushes into the paint.

Duckling Housekeeping

As the children were playing in the dramatic play area Ms. Laurie said, "The baby looks dirty let's wash it."  Some of the children followed her to the table as she filled a plastic bathtub with water.  She provided the children with paper towels to bathe the baby.  They enjoyed splashing their hands in the cold water.  They also had a chance to identify body parts as she suggested the various areas that needed to be washed.  Ms. Laurie then placed dishes in the water for the children to wash.  She encouraged the children to explore and discover.  This form of modeling teaches the children real life skills.
