Welcome !

Early Childhood Center-School Year 2016-2017

"Play is the highest expression of human development."
Welcome to The One School At Temple Beth Am, Celebrating the Whole Child. We understand and respect that every child is essentially, ‘the one.’ Every child is unique. The specifics of how we nurture and grow each child are dependent entirely upon the needs of the child. This is how we celebrate each child - by engaging him or her at his or her point of need. The One School partners with every parent to ensure every child is championed and educated as an individual.

The One School is a NAEYC Accredited, Reggio Emilia Nature-inspired school, serving ages 18 months to five years. The One School offers certified teachers, a low student/teacher ratio, an emergent creative curriculum and specialty areas of study including science, art, music, foreign language and nature study. The One School’s curricula are supplemented by young family programs and parenting workshops, an infant and toddler program, Family Center, Summer Camp, after school enrichment classes and an active and instrumental Parent Teacher Organization. A commitment to contribute to the community and the world at large is also a part of the school’s social justice philosophy.

Orientation Night

It was great seeing many of our families at Orientation Night.  The first part of our meeting was in the social hall, where yummy and my tummy offered some samples of their food.  Ms Paula talked a little about the philosophy and special programming.  And all parents visited the classrooms.

A bit of philosophy about our school

Our school focus on process learning?  Process learning conceives of learning in terms of its processes rather than the product.  The focus is to provide children experiences that promote thinking and problem-solving with specifically identified outcomes.  In process learning, children not only learn by doing but also reflect on the learning process itself and are able to transfer the information learned in one process or learning situation to another.

Rosh Hashanah Birthday Present for the New Year

Happy Birthday to the world!  Happy Birthday to you!  What sweet honey of a birthday gift can you give yourself this year? This year on Rosh Hashanah, take the "Have a Sweet Year" symbolism literally and find ways to bring kindness and gentleness and loving care into your interactions with the world around you and especially with yourself.
Volunteer Mitzvah goreret mitvah- one act of Kindness leads to another.  It's amazing how much a small act of service can create perspective in you life while contributing to the flow of generously of spirit around you.

Apples and Honey Program was so much fun.  Our families had a blast.  Enjoy the photos on our Temple

Power of Music- Conference with Ellen Allard

Early childhood. a period of rapid change and development, is the most critical period in a child's musical growth.  According to Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner, music intelligence is equal in importance to logical/mathematical, linguistic, spatial, bodily/kinesthetic, interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences.
Rabbi Alon, David Sherman, Paula Deakter and our musical director, Mr Brett attended this informative workshop with Ellen Allard. Ellen, a multi-award winning Recording Artist, Composer, Performer, and Educator specializes in music for young children.  Our preschool children sing many of her popular songs both secular and Jewish.

Why we teach Music?
Not because we expect you to major in music.
Not because we expect you to play or sing all your life.
Not so you can relax.
Not so you can have fun.
But- so you will be human.
So you will recognize bearty.
So you will be sensitive.
So you will be closer to an infinite beyond this world.
So you will have something to cling to.
So you will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness, more good, in short
more life
Of what value will it be to make a prosperous living unless we know how to live?

Yael Lawrence- Our own Certified Dance Therapist on Staff

Yael Lawrence is a Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist with a Master of Science in Creative Art Therapy from the Pratt Institute of New York.  Ms. Yael's ballet class at Temple Beth Am will allow boys and girls to explore their creativity and imagination while learning basic ballet techniques.  Ballet helps boys and girls with strength, coordination and balance and a great way to make friends.  We are proud to have Yael on our staff teaching ballet, hip-hop, body science for our two's and music for our gradual separation class.  She is also our family center coordinator!  She also teaches classes for special needs children!

Welcome back to Temple Beth Am Preschool and PTO Ice Cream Social

Welcome back to a great new year!  Teachers enjoyed an outdoor breakfast at the beginning of the week and then spent many hours making their room beautiful for our families and children.  Thank you PTO for a delicious ice cream social.  It was great seeing new and old friends and we can't wait until Monday to begin our year!  Check out Temple Beth Am's  facebook page for more pictures.

Camp is Over and Ready for New Beginnings!

We have concluded another successful summer camp program, and we would like to take this opportunity to say “Hello,” to everyone and let you know about some really exciting things that are going on here in preparation for the new school year!

First of all, we have been sprucing up our classrooms with fresh paint. Thank you to preschool mom and design professional, Stacy Miller, for assisting us in choosing the beautiful, natural colors that soon will adorn all of our school.

Also, we are so excited to unveil our new Atelier, or artist’s studio. In our Atelier, and in keeping with the philosophy of the Reggio Emilia model, our preschoolers will be provided with the opportunity to explore and connect with a variety of media and materials. Our studio will be a haven for all of our students to effectively express themselves and to discover their own creativity in a inspirational surrounding. Thank you to Miss Robin for sharing her own creativity with us and for setting up our beautiful new Atelier. We look forward to sharing this special space with all of you.

This year, we hope that everyone will lend a hand and volunteer some time to tend to our community garden. Albert Jacob, one of our preschool parents and a landscape architect by trade, has created a plan for our beautiful child-friendly garden, Amy Russell has generously donated the funds for the irrigation, while Liz Perez has had a watchful eye over the whole project. Our sincerest thanks to each of them for their contributions and we excited about planting this fall.

Due to the number of children with allergies as well as our desire to see all of our preschoolers have healthier snacks while in our care, this fall we will no longer be offering morning snack during the regular school day. We ask that when packing your child’s lunch, you label his or her snack accordingly so that the teachers will know what to give your child at snack time. We will have individually packaged snacks, like crackers or Nutri-grain bars available should a child come to school without snack, at a cost of $1.00, which also may be purchased for $5 per week. For those children who will be staying with us for after care, we will continue to provide a healthy snack in the afternoon.

We will once again offer our “Yummy in My Tummy” lunch service Mondays through Thursdays, beginning on Monday, August 26th. As soon as we have the August menu, it will be distributed for everyone to review. Each meal is $5 and orders must be received in the Preschool office by Wednesday for the following week’s lunches.

Preschool Pizza Fridays will be back this year! Sign up the evening of the Ice Cream Social. Receive the best price by paying for the school year in advance: $180. Or sign up for August – December: $88 and January – May: $105.

Finally, speaking of our Ice Cream Social, don’t forget to mark your calendars to join us for this fun event on Thursday, August 15th at 6:00pm. Visit your child’s classroom, meet your child’s teacher and then join us in the social hall for a sweet summer treat!

We look forward to seeing all of the familiar faces and also to welcoming our newest families as a part of our Preschool family. If you have any questions or concerns before then, please do not hesitate to stop by the preschool office or call us at 561-747-3339.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and we will see everyone very soon!
